ECHO

Echo uses the image of River feeding Clover grapes to give her the courage to carry out what she needs to do. Because there’s only one thing worse than being captured by Oren. And that would be going through all of this for nothing. At least this way, she’ll always know she tried.

Saying goodbye to River in Nola’s hut had sliced her heart wide open. Watching Clover pawing him at the Razers’ meeting had rubbed salt in the wound. She’s not sure she’s ever going to heal. Although, truthfully, she’s not sure she wants to. Because healing would mean River meant nothing to her, when he means everything.

He always will.

Which is why she’s not going to sit around waiting for Chase to send a message to Tuff to bring Reed to the tunnel. She doesn’t care how many Razers agreed to it. They don’t have the luxury of waiting. Every minute counts if they’re going to beat Oren to finding the Sovereign Code. Besides, River had made a good point at the meeting—Reed is unlikely to go with Tuff to meet them after what happened last time.

As soon as night falls, Echo leaves through Nola’s small door and heads to the hut she used to share with her father. Thankfully Jupiter returned home to grieve with their parents. She’s not really sure what they’d think of her plan. Most likely, they’d try to talk her out of it. Which is not going to happen.

It had been obvious in the Razers’ meeting what Echo needs to do, given she’s the only person who seems to be thinking clearly right now. Well, apart from River, but it’s impossible for him to act when he’s shackled to a hungry Queen.

She needs to go to the Green Zone and talk to Reed.

Tonight.

Reed hadn’t been thinking clearly the last time she’d seen him. The death of his cousin had shaken his foundations by making this war personal. Now he needs to choose a side. But unlike Echo, this decision isn’t clear cut for him. He’s fought too hard for the Green Zone for too long now. He can’t see what’s right in front of his face. Which makes him a risk. And the longer they leave that risk unattended, the more dangerous he is. If they’d had any choice, they’d never have left him at all.

She reaches the hut and just as she was hoping, Clover’s white suit is hanging outside on a thin wire Echo and her father used for their laundry. She rolls her eyes as she quietly snatches it off the line. She knew Clover couldn’t possibly go more than a couple of days without washing her clothes. Although, she strongly suspects it wasn’t Clover who cleaned this suit.

Poor River. The guy Clover calls King but treats more like a worker bee.

Echo slips out of her torn jeans and ragged shirt and hangs them on the line in the place of Clover’s suit as a message for River that she hopes he never finds.
